Specialised bird spike installation & high-access pest deterrents in Melbourne

Birds are a maintenance problem as much as a nuisance. Their droppings are acidic enough to corrode a facade, they foul solar panels and cut their output, and the nests bring in other pests. Bird spikes and solar bird-proofing keep them off, and the places they roost, the high ledges, parapets, signs and the gaps under solar panels, are exactly where rope access earns its keep.

We install off ropes, which lets our technicians work close and careful next to cladding and panels, where a slip could mean a leak or a voided warranty. On a job we clear the droppings, nests and debris first, then fit the deterrent:

  • Spikes on ledges, parapets, signs and sills to stop birds perching and nesting.
  • UV-coated mesh around the open edges of a solar array, the humane way to keep birds and rodents out from under the panels. It clips on without drilling the panels or frames, so the warranty stays intact.

Safety and warranty

Installing at height counts as construction work, so it runs to the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004. A Safe Work Method Statement is written before any high-risk work, our technicians are IRATA/ARAA certified and trained in rescue, and rope access is used as a Level 3 control where scaffolding (Level 2) is not practical. We carry $20 million Public Liability Insurance. On solar in particular, the warranty risk is the drilling that cheaper installers do to fix deterrents. We never drill the panels or frames.

What it costs

We quote free, on the building. The price moves on the height, how hard the roosting spots are to reach, and how much of the facade or array needs protecting. It is often worth pairing the job with high dusting, a solar clean or anchor point work while we are up there. Send us photos of where the birds are landing or nesting, and we will quote the spikes or mesh.

Frequently asked questions

Why is rope access necessary for installing bird spikes on high-rise buildings in Melbourne?

Industrial rope access (abseiling) is necessary because it provides better accessibility and precision for working on high-rise facades and complex architectural elements that are otherwise inaccessible to traditional scaffolding or elevated work platforms (EWPs). Rope access is a Level 3 control for working at height, requiring certified personnel to execute the installation safely and efficiently.

How do you ensure bird proofing does not void my solar panel warranty?

We guarantee warranty protection by using non-invasive methods, primarily installing high-quality, UV-coated mesh around the panels to deter birds and rodents. We do not drill holes into the solar panels or frames, as drilling can void the panel warranty and lead to structural issues or water ingress.

What safety compliance documentation is required for high-access bird spike installation in Victoria?

Because this type of installation usually involves working more than two metres off the ground, it’s treated as high-risk construction work. Before anything starts on site, a Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) has to be in place. The SWMS sets out the main site risks, including falls from height, along with any exposure issues linked to pest control activities, so everyone involved understands what needs to be managed before work begins.

What types of damage do bird droppings cause on commercial buildings?

Bird droppings are highly acidic and corrosive, leading to structural harm and aesthetic degradation. They can cause pollution build-up on surfaces, decrease solar panel efficiency, spread diseases, and are unsightly and smelly, negatively impacting a building's professional appearance.

Are your high-access installation technicians certified?

Yes, our teams are comprised of trained professionals who hold essential competency credentials, including IRATA/ARAA certifications. This training ensures expertise in rope access techniques, safe equipment usage, and adherence to stringent OHS and Safety Management Systems standards.

What affects the price of bird spike installation

Every building is quoted after we have seen it. These are the factors that move the number up or down - ask us about any of them and we will explain how they apply to your site.

Height and access methodRope access, elevated work platform or suspended platform - the method is chosen for the building, and it sets the crew size and setup time.
Surface area and conditionHeavy soiling, salt, traffic film or construction residue take longer and need specialised products.
Facade complexityRecesses, angled or domed glazing, tight gaps between buildings and heritage detailing all slow the descent down.
Access and anchor pointsBuildings with certified anchor points are quicker to set up. If there are none, temporary systems or installation are quoted separately.
SchedulingWork outside trading hours, staged access or occupied tenancies affect the programme. Regular maintenance cycles are cheaper per visit than one-off jobs.

Quotes are free and carry no obligation. Where the work is subject to a compliance requirement, the quote states which standard it is carried out to.

Suburbs we cover

Builders clean before handover: what site managers get wrong

A builders clean is the last step before keys change hands, and it is where most handover delays start.
